As governments worldwide weigh restrictions, the e-cigarette industry's outlook remains unclear
As concerns grow over the increasing use of e-cigarettes among non-smokers and the younger generation, the e-cigarette industry is facing potential regulatory scrutiny. Governments worldwide are considering restrictions on the sale of disposable e-cigarettes, leaving the industry's future uncertain.
A recent report has revealed a trend of rising popularity for e-cigarettes over the past decade, with health organizations recognizing them as a better alternative to traditional smoking. However, according to CNBC, the industry is now preparing for possible regulatory interventions.
Marcus Saxton, CEO of the UK-based e-cigarette company Totally Wicked, estimates the e-cigarette market to be valued between $3 billion and $4 billion, suggesting that the black market may account for two-thirds of that figure.
As cigarette sales revenue declines, tobacco companies are shifting their focus to the growing e-cigarette market. Owen Bennett, a global tobacco and cannabis equity researcher at Jefferies, stated, "The traditional cigarette model, particularly in terms of declining sales, is under increasing pressure."
As of October, 28 countries have banned the sale of e-cigarettes, while countries like the UK, Germany, France, Ireland, and Belgium are considering banning disposable e-cigarettes. However, implementing such regulations may face significant challenges.
Jasmine Kuja, a senior research associate at the University of Bristol's Tobacco and Alcohol Research Group, noted, "What we are seeing in the US is that e-cigarette use has begun to plateau, and I think it has started to decline slightly."
Why this matters: The e-cigarette industry has undergone significant changes over the years, shifting towards smoke-free consumption methods like e-cigarettes. However, due to increasing health concerns and potential regulatory interventions, the industry is now under scrutiny.
In April 2021, the US Congress passed the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021, which included a ban on e-cigarette mailings. This move reflects the growing scrutiny of the industry, which could impact its future growth.
