Settled: Ohio successfully overrides governor’s veto on part of tobacco law
Key point: Control over city tobacco and vaping policies now rests with the Republican Senate
The fate of stricter tobacco laws in Ohio cities now rests in the hands of Republican Senate President Matt Huffman.
In the final voting session of 2023, Republicans in the Ohio House of Representatives unexpectedly voted to override Gov. Mike DeWine's veto of a portion of the state budget. That portion of the budget, which was cut by DeWine this past July, would have prevented cities or counties from adopting or enforcing local laws to restrict tobacco sales.
