Latest Data: Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander U.S. Teens Report High Vaping Use

Key takeaway: Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander adolescents in the United States report high rates of vaping use.

According to statistics, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander teens in the U.S. currently have a higher vaping usage rate compared to other racial and ethnic groups, according to a new study published in the Journal of Preventive Medicine Reports.

The Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) population is underrepresented in tobacco research and has historically been combined into one group. However, merging AANHPI into one group may obscure critical tobacco-related differences among different subgroups. Understanding the prevalence of tobacco use within specific groups is an important first step in addressing tobacco-related disparities.

The study found that Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander teens are more than three times as likely to report using e-cigarettes at least one day in the past 30 days compared to Asian American teens, and nearly three times as likely to report using e-cigarettes on 10 or more days in the past 30 days.
