Italy confirms that the TEREA tobacco stick in IQOS Iluma poses a threat to children, with 21 cases of accidental ingestion of metal fragments reported, necessitating measures to protect the health of children and animals.

Recently, according to Greenme, the Italian consumer rights protection organization Altroconsumo has confirmed the risks associated with the TEREA tobacco stick blades in IQOS Iluma products.

Altroconsumo publicly stated that, according to reports from a poison control center in Milan, there have also been cases in Italy where children (21 in total) accidentally ingested the blades of the TEREA tobacco sticks.

Altroconsumo's report in December highlighted an important fact: the widely used TEREA tobacco sticks in IQOS Iluma contain risks. The presence of metal fragments is not clearly indicated on the packaging, posing risks to both children and animals, especially in cases of accidental ingestion.

Currently, official confirmation has been received from Italy regarding the first cases of children accidentally ingesting the blades. According to Altroconsumo's report, 21 children have accidentally ingested the blades of the TEREA tobacco sticks, and these cases were reported within just five months, suggesting that the actual problem may be even more serious and widespread.

Altroconsumo noted that in some cases, attempts were made to remove the metal fragments using endoscopy: this is a fairly serious procedure for such small children, with associated risks requiring anesthesia and observation; it is performed using a relatively long tube inserted through the mouth, allowing for visibility and operation throughout the digestive tract to the intestines.

Before further interventions are made to protect the health of children, the general population, and animals, it is crucial to follow some simple recommendations. TEREA should be kept out of reach of children, individuals with cognitive impairments, and household pets.

If accidental ingestion occurs, seek medical attention immediately and inform the doctor about the presence of metal fragments. It is also advised not to attempt to open the TEREA device, as this may cause injury to the hands.
