Seattle Public Schools Awarded Nearly $2 Million in Vaping Lawsuit
Four years ago, Seattle Public Schools joined school districts across the country in suing JUUL Labs and other e-cigarette companies. They claimed these companies intentionally marketed and designed their products to appeal to children, leading to a significant increase in youth smoking and nicotine addiction.
Now, this lawsuit is yielding results: last week, the school district board accepted a $1.75 million settlement agreement. This amount will be paid in installments over the next four years.
According to the settlement agreement, the funds must be used for "compensation, restoration, or remediation," and the district stated that this funding will be part of a "multifaceted approach" to combat youth smoking. This includes prevention, early intervention, and cessation.
The district indicated that this money may also be used to address mental health issues that may lead to student smoking.
Seattle is expected to receive the first payment of $750,000 from JUUL this month.
