Australian tobacco harm reduction advocate Colin Mendelsohn announces retirement

After nearly a decade of advocating for e-cigarettes as a tobacco harm reduction strategy in Australia, Colin Mendelsohn announced his retirement in Filter magazine.

In his article, Mendelsohn expressed disappointment with Australia's tobacco control stance, describing the country as having fallen from "once a global leader to the current slow-moving wreckage of a train."

He wrote, "While other Western democracies see e-cigarettes as a tremendous public health opportunity, the Australian government continues to frame them as a threat." He believes that the subsequent prohibitive regulations have offset potential benefits and led to disturbing and escalating unintended consequences.

Throughout his career, Mendelsohn faced harsh criticism from anti-vaping groups.

He wrote, "My evidence-based advocacy and the efforts of others have been constantly undermined by defamation, insults, and harassment. I have repeatedly faced false accusations funded by big tobacco companies, including in national print media and national broadcasting."

Despite his disappointment with Australia's tobacco control policy choices and personal attacks, Mendelsohn remains optimistic that tobacco harm reduction can ultimately prevail.

He wrote, "As I retire, my hope is that Australia can adopt a balanced, evidence-based approach to e-cigarettes. This will not happen quickly. The latest regulatory crackdown needs to run its course and fail again before much-needed reforms can take place."

"Then, we need to step out of the echo chamber of Australian tobacco control groups if we are to recognize that e-cigarettes are not a 'public health threat' but a powerful ally in combating tobacco-related harm."
