Sachse, Texas police launch enforcement action over underage tobacco sales

Key point: Tobacco and vaping retailers in Sachse, Texas were reported for selling tobacco to minors, prompting police enforcement action. Retailers found in violation were fined $300, and vaping is becoming an increasingly serious local issue.

In Southington, Connecticut, tobacco and e-cigarette retailers have been reported for selling tobacco to minors, prompting police enforcement action. The retailers found in violation were fined $300, as e-cigarettes have become an increasingly serious issue in the area.

According to local media patch, on December 17, several tobacco/e-cigarette retailers in Southington were cited during a police enforcement operation for selling tobacco/e-cigarettes to minors during a compliance check on December 11.

The reported retailers include: Cigar and Vape, Sunoco, and Vape and Tobacco World, as stated by the local STEPS organization (a drug and substance use prevention organization that collaborates with local schools and police).

This enforcement action was initiated by the Southington Police Department and the state Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services' Tobacco Enforcement Program (TPEP). STEPS reported that the operation was unannounced and involved legal compliance checks on four retailers.

The cited retailers' employees were fined $300 for selling tobacco or e-cigarettes to individuals under 21. Police stated that the law requires anyone who appears to be under 30 years old to show identification when purchasing tobacco/e-cigarette products.

STEPS mentioned that e-cigarettes are particularly a growing problem in the area. The organization revealed some alarming statistics regarding local e-cigarette use. Among them, the percentage of students using e-cigarettes increased by 33% from 2020 to 2022; data from 2022 showed that 12% of students had smoked in the past 30 days, up from 9% in 2020.

“Restricting youth access to tobacco and e-cigarette products is an important way to prevent their use, so we appreciate those stores and employees who comply with state regulations,” STEPS stated in a press release.
