South East London man's vape battery explodes in truck
In this shocking moment, a man's vape battery exploded, burning his arm and igniting fiercely.
33-year-old truck driver Liam Moriarty was waiting to pick up cargo in Dartford, Kent, when a spare battery exploded after falling from his pocket.
Liam had tilted the seat back at the time, causing the battery to drop into the seat's mechanical mechanism.
The mechanical mechanism of the seat trapped the battery, leading to the explosion, with flames shooting towards Liam.
Liam, from South East London, said: "The tilting mechanism of the seat trapped the battery; it was just my bad luck.
"There was a loud hissing sound, and when I looked up, flames suddenly shot out and burned my elbow."
Liam's truck was equipped with ADR equipment, meaning it could transport hazardous materials and was equipped with fire extinguishers.
Liam used the fire extinguisher to put out the flames, successfully protecting himself and the truck.
Liam mentioned that there was a bed and other flammable items nearby, which meant the cab could have caught fire and destroyed the £130,000 truck.
Liam said: "It's because this is an ADR-equipped truck that there was a fire extinguisher.
"On the side with the gear mechanism, there was a bed, a seat, all of which are flammable items that could have ignited a fire."
Fortunately, his injuries were not serious; the flames only slightly scorched his skin.
Liam said: "I was more worried about the truck; it was a vehicle that was only three months old.
"If something happened, I would be out of work and face a huge insurance claim. Each of these trucks costs £130,000.
"That would be a massive loss."
