Vaping Scandal Erupts in Luton, UK: Excessive E-Liquid Content and Sales to Children as Young as 10

  A vaping scandal has erupted in Luton, with some e-cigarettes said to be equivalent to 500 traditional cigarettes. Some retailers were reportedly selling vapes to children under the age of 11. There are 119 locations involved in illegal tobacco-related activity in the Luton area.

According to a quick report from lutontoday, a counterfeit vape incident recently broke out in Luton, UK. These products are attractive to teenagers and children, and contain excessive amounts of e-liquid, with some allegedly equivalent to 500 traditional cigarettes. A council report warned that some shop owners were even marketing these vapes to children as young as 10 or 11.

According to data from Luton Council’s tobacco control strategy, there are 119 premises involved in illegal tobacco activity in the Luton area, most of them concentrated in the town centre and Bury Park. The sale and supply of illegal tobacco and vaping products has become a nationwide issue, including sales to minors.

According to the report, Trading Standards sent these illegal vaping products to a laboratory for analysis, and the results found excessive levels of lead and cadmium. Most of these illegal vapes were imported from China, and their nicotine and e-liquid volumes exceeded the UK’s legal limits.

In addition, since 2021, Trading Standards has seized 13,378 illegal vaping products. Through local enforcement actions and successful court rulings, the number of illegal vapes in the Luton area has fallen significantly, and shop owners now have a better understanding of their responsibilities.
