Sonoma County, US, to ban tobacco product sales in unincorporated areas
According to local news on the 27th, the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors voted to ban the sale of flavored tobacco products and e-cigarettes in unincorporated areas of the county.
County officials stated in a statement on Tuesday that this change is in response to public health data showing an increase in the use of e-cigarettes and flavored tobacco among high school-aged youth.
A study from the California Health Kids Survey showed that 46% of 11th-grade students in Sonoma County reported having used e-cigarettes, with 76% stating that it was “fairly easy” or “very easy” to obtain e-cigarettes.
Sonoma County Board Chair Chris Coursey stated in a statement, “By banning the sale of certain tobacco products that have become entrenched in youth culture, we can reduce the ease with which children can access these dangerous products.”
This latest move by Sonoma County aligns with cities like Petaluma and Sebastopol, which have also banned the sale of e-cigarettes and flavored tobacco.
According to county officials, there are currently 79 licensed tobacco retailers in unincorporated areas of Sonoma County, accounting for 23% of all tobacco retailers in the county.
Since 2022, California law has prohibited the sale of most flavored tobacco products, but there are some exceptions. Local governments like Sonoma County are allowed to implement stricter policies.
In 2022, the American Heart Association warned about the negative impacts of flavored tobacco products and e-cigarettes on lung and cardiovascular function, brain health, mental health, and sleep health.
