After Settlement with JUUL, Syracuse School District in the US Will Receive US$137,000

The Syracuse City School District in New York, USA, has received $137,161 in settlement funds from e-cigarette manufacturer JUUL to enhance youth tobacco control efforts.

According to CNY Central, the Syracuse City School District will receive this compensation from e-cigarette manufacturer JUUL.

In New York State, over 140 school districts have received more than $3.6 million in compensation to address the burdens of subsequent lawsuits against JUUL, claiming that the company "deliberately marketed e-cigarette products to children."

According to the Syracuse City School District, "The use of e-cigarettes by students has forced the district to incur costs related to staff time, disciplinary procedures, and other expenses, which will only increase unless and until students stop using these devices."

According to an FDA survey in 2022, more than one in four middle and high school students used e-cigarettes daily, with nearly 85% using fruit-flavored e-cigarettes.

This settlement will provide funding for the school to address future expenses related to youth smoking issues, including installing e-cigarette detectors, hiring additional staff to monitor smoking areas on campus, employing extra counselors to handle social and emotional issues related to nicotine addiction, and developing and running educational programs about the harms of e-cigarettes.

On October 11, 2021, the Syracuse City School District Board approved this settlement, stating that "it is necessary, beneficial, ideal, and in the public interest and the best interest of the district to resolve this lawsuit."
