UK Political Figures Call for a Complete Ban on Disposable Vapes

The UK government plans to restrict the use of e-cigarettes to combat the issue of youth smoking, but it has faced strong backlash and criticism from society. Some experts and local governments are calling for a complete ban on disposable vapes, believing this is the most effective way to address the problem.

According to reports from UK media Inews, the UK government has announced an eight-week public consultation. However, some members of society criticize Prime Minister Rishi Sunak for only focusing on reducing the use of disposable vapes without actively addressing the phenomenon of youth vaping or implementing a complete ban on disposable e-cigarettes.

The plan includes considering not only restrictions on the sale of disposable vapes but also additional modifications, such as affecting the flavors of e-cigarettes and packaging to reduce their appeal to children, and increasing e-cigarette prices, among other measures, to lessen their attraction to young people.

In response to these policies, the Children’s Commissioner for England, Dame Rachel de Souza, is urging Sunak to take decisive action and implement a complete ban on disposable vapes.

“Only by taking strong action, including a complete ban on disposable vapes, can we prevent young people from becoming addicted to vaping,” she said.
The Local Government Association (LGA) of England and Wales has also joined the call for the Prime Minister to impose a complete ban on disposable vapes. David Fothergill, chair of the LGA's Community Wellbeing Board, stated:
“Disposable vapes are inherently unsustainable products, and therefore a complete ban is the most effective way to solve this problem.”
A draft shows that the proportion of UK youth trying e-cigarettes has increased by 50% in the past year. The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) has also called for a complete ban on disposable vapes, emphasizing that they are "not risk-free products and may be as addictive as traditional cigarettes, if not more so.”
Although the government aims to protect children from the long-term harms of smoking as quickly as possible based on previous commitments, the situation remains very concerning.
Wes Streeting, a member of the UK Labour Party and shadow health minister, stated that if the Labour Party enters 10 Downing Street (i.e., comes to power), it will respond to the call for a complete ban on disposable vapes, adding:
“I want to see them completely disappear.”
