Welsh government calls for a ban on disposable vaping devices

Key point: According to the BBC, the Welsh government has joined Scotland in calling for a ban on disposable vaping devices, saying it would be a key step in tackling youth vaping.
According to BBC reports, the Welsh government has joined the Scottish government in calling for a ban on disposable e-cigarettes. Welsh ministers stated that this move would be part of a series of measures to address the issue of youth vaping, but the Welsh government does not have the authority to ban e-cigarettes, hence the call for the UK government to take action. Welsh ministers are expected to meet with the UK government later this week regarding this issue.

The UK vaping industry association stated that banning disposable e-cigarettes is "not the answer" and that such a ban could lead to a black market and increased smoking rates, putting more people at risk. John Dunne, the director-general of the UK Vaping Industry Association, said: "We have always acknowledged that the issues of youth vaping and the environmental impact of e-cigarettes need to be addressed, but it is clear that enforcement against retailers selling products to minors needs to be significantly strengthened."

The wildlife charity RSPCA Cymru supports the call for a ban, stating that discarded e-cigarettes contain plastics, lithium, and nicotine, all of which are harmful to animals.
