Key point: According to Indonesian media outlet Viva, Indonesia’s parliament (DPR) recently passed the 2023 Health Bill No. 17, formally incorporating e-cigarettes into law and classifying them as addictive substances.

According to Indonesian media Viva, the Indonesian Parliament (DPR) has recently passed the Health Law No. 17 of 2023, which includes e-cigarettes in the law, classifying them as addictive substances. This is a positive development for industry participants and smokers' health.

Teguh Basuki A Wibowo, chairman of the Indonesian Electronic Nicotine Industry Alliance (APPNINDO), stated that this law will encourage the industry to operate and invest in Indonesia with more legal protection, hoping the government will formulate more related policies based on scientific evidence. Like other countries, the law treats e-cigarettes equally. This law also aligns Indonesia with other countries in regulating e-cigarettes, such as the Philippines and the UK, which also regulate e-cigarettes, stipulating that they can only be consumed by adults.
