"It is particularly noteworthy that 52% of total production comes from A1 and A2 farmers, which confirms the success of the land reform program," he said.
In the early 2000s, Zimbabwe confiscated most of its large-scale tobacco farms owned by whites and redistributed them to landless farmers.
Tobacco production grew despite the war in Ukraine that led to higher fertilizer prices.
Zimbabwe's tobacco production plummeted from a high of about 240 million kilograms in 1998 to less than 50 million kilograms 10 years later, and has been rebounding since then.
Through its Tobacco Value Chain Transformation Program, the southern African country has been trying to increase profits in its tobacco industry by producing more cigarettes domestically and limiting foreign aid to farmers.

The World Tobacco Conference was held in the African continent for the first time. Tobacco exhibitions were previously held in Europe, Asia, and the Americas. This African Tobacco Conference is scheduled to be held at the Rainbow Tower Hotel in Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe, from May 15 to 16, 2024.
The meeting will cover the future of African tobacco: important topics such as production levels and industry organization, IPS roll planting contracts and the sustainability of the tobacco supply chain.
The event will be divided into two parts, with the Tobacco Leaf Conference being held in the large conference hall, and the adjacent foyer area providing booths for companies that specialize in the Tobacco Leaf Industry and want to attend the conference, and meeting and greeting the many high-quality representatives we expect.
The second part will be a general tobacco exhibition in the Jakaranda showroom for companies that supply materials, machinery, instruments or any general tobacco-related products.
We look forward to an exciting event that will bring together people from the African region and international markets.
