The Guardian: Flavored Vapes Help Smokers Quit Cigarettes
According to The Guardian, a new study has found that flavored e-cigarettes can help smokers quit cigarettes. The study was jointly led by London South Bank University in collaboration with University College London, the University of East Anglia, and the University of New South Wales. A total of 1,214 participants were recruited, with a focus on identifying the circumstances in which e-cigarettes can help smokers quit.
After three months, 24.5% of participants had successfully quit smoking, while another 13% had reduced their cigarette consumption by more than half. The study also found that those who received help choosing suitable e-cigarette flavors were 55% more likely to quit within three months than those who did not receive such personalized support.
Lynne Dawkins, Professor of Nicotine and Tobacco Studies at London South Bank University, told The Guardian: “Around 8 million people worldwide die from cigarettes every year, and even some of the most effective treatments have had limited success in reducing smoking rates.”
“With this treatment, 24.5% of people had quit smoking after three months, and another 13% had reduced their cigarette consumption by more than 50%. Simple tailored support through flavor advice and supportive messaging could have a huge impact in helping people live smoke-free lives.”
The positive findings of this study align with the UK government’s recent announcement of a groundbreaking ‘swap to stop’ program, which will provide one million smokers with e-cigarette starter kits to help them quit.
