UK lawmakers face mounting pressure for a total ban on disposable e-cigarettes

Due to concerns about the increasing popularity of disposable electronic cigarettes among young people, as well as doubts about the ability of regulatory agencies to control this rapidly developing industry, UK lawmakers are facing mounting pressure to impose a total ban on disposable electronic cigarettes.<\/p>

The government's call for evidence on electronic cigarettes and young people in England will end on June 6, and measures are expected to be taken to combat illegal electronic cigarette sales, as well as the marketing and distribution of relatively cheap disposable electronic cigarettes.<\/p>

A government official stated that the latter is particularly concerning. They said: Some marketing and branding are very poor—it looks like a candy store.<\/p>

Some health organizations have broader concerns about the government's approach, raised by junior health minister Neil O'Brien in a speech last month, which encourages the use of electronic cigarettes as an alternative to traditional tobacco products and plans to implement a "swap to stop" scheme that provides free starter kits of electronic cigarettes to one million smokers in England.<\/p>

They believe that the relatively short history of electronic cigarettes means that little is known about their long-term health effects, and evidence regarding the effectiveness of electronic cigarettes as a smoking cessation method is similarly limited, as seen in countries like Australia where electronic cigarettes are only allowed for prescription use.<\/p>

The most direct battle is likely to be fought over disposable electronic cigarettes, as more than half of young electronic cigarette users choose to use them.<\/p>
