Reporter says the UK sold 138 million disposable vaping devices last year
Today, the UK Vaping Industry Association (UKVIA) said that before considering a ban on disposable vaping devices, more measures could be taken to reduce environmental waste.
Earlier this week, the vaping trade body joined experts from an All-Party Parliamentary Group on the environment in Westminster. Environment Minister Rebecca Pow highlighted the primary value of vaping devices as a tool to help people quit smoking, as well as the government’s second priority of preventing youth access to vaping devices.
Association Director General John Dunne agreed, saying that much more can be done before considering a ban on disposable vaping devices, and that such a ban would do nothing to help the hundreds of people who die from smoking-related diseases.
“Research from the Royal College of Physicians and Cancer Research UK shows that vaping is the best way to quit smoking, with harm reduced by 95%. Vaping is our best opportunity,” he said.
However, UKVIA also recognizes its role in finding effective environmental solutions, noting how several waste management companies and manufacturers under the association are creating more sustainable materials for vaping devices, including cardboard and biodegradable silicone, which is a successful step forward.
Financial reporter Alexandra Heal, who was also present, revealed that 138 million disposable vaping devices were sold last year, equivalent to two per person.
