Singapore Seizes 70,200 Vape Cartridges from Malaysia-Registered Truck
According to The Straits Times today, on March 28, someone attempted to smuggle 70,200 e-vaporizer refill pods into Singapore using a Malaysia-registered truck, but the shipment was seized.
On Monday, the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said in a Facebook post that the truck, which was transporting a shipment of bottled mineral water, was stopped for inspection at Tuas Checkpoint.
ICA officers discovered multiple boxes of pods hidden among the bottled water. In total, 70,200 e-vaporizer refill packs in various flavors were found.
ICA said the case has been referred to the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) for further investigation.
Last Wednesday, HSA seized 85,000 e-vaporizers and related components from a warehouse unit in Mandai, the largest seizure of such products to date.
Five suspected runners, aged between 20 and 33, were detained and are assisting HSA with investigations. The import, distribution, sale, and offer for sale of harmful or imitation tobacco products such as electronic vaporizers and chewing tobacco are illegal.
First-time offenders may be fined up to S$10,000, jailed for up to six months, or both. Repeat offenders may face a fine of up to S$20,000, imprisonment for up to 12 months, or both.
