Arizona Teen Warns Others About E-Cigarette Explosions

A teenager from Maricopa has become one of the many victims injured by exploding e-cigarettes.

Hailey Boyce, 17, said her e-cigarette exploded while she was with friends a few months ago.

"I started feeling this weird burning all around me," Hailey said. "I can't even explain the feeling, but it hurt. I was screaming, 'Get it out! Get it out!'

The teen said the explosion set her hair and clothes on fire.

She suffered second and third-degree burns on her chest, side, and hand.

Pieces of the e-cigarette were found in the neighborhood.

Dr. Kevin Foster, who oversees the burn services at the Arizona Burn Center, said what happened to Boyce is not an isolated incident; they have seen at least 15 burn patients who have been injured by e-cigarettes in the past three months.

"Unfortunately, we really can't provide people with a safe choice or a safe way to use these things," Foster said. "We don't know what will happen when they get in the car, or what the injury will be like."

It is still unclear what caused the e-cigarette to explode, but many believe it is due to the small batteries.

Many e-cigarette devices and batteries come from other countries and can sometimes malfunction.

Hailey wants to warn others to be careful.

"I hate that it happened to others," Boyce said. "I don't want them to go through the incredible pain. It's really scary."

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is currently working on new regulations for e-cigarettes that will include safety standards for manufacturers and batteries.
