The Big Vape Family: Gippro started its entrepreneurial journey in Japan in 2017. Why did you choose the e-cigarette industry? Gippro vape distribution Liang Ming: As a Japanese company, we witnessed the development of IQOS in Japan, which captured 30% of the business from JT in three years. In 2017, mainstream cigarette brands began developing HNB products, leading to a tripartite competition among IQOS, Ploom Tech, and GLO in Japan. This is not just about a single product; it represents a shift for the entire industry. Japan's channels are relatively conservative, and it takes years to establish a foothold. We have over a decade of experience in the electronics industry, which gives us confidence. It is normal for Japanese products to take two years to perfect, and under the pressure of the Japanese team, we quickly developed the SW1. In China, product requirements are not as stringent as in Japan, so our products are considered top-tier domestically.

The Big Vape Family: What were your main considerations in choosing the e-cigarette industry? Gippro vape distribution Liang Ming: Initially, I was quite resistant to e-cigarettes. However, since 2017, there has been a significant demand for e-cigarette products. I spent several weeks reviewing a lot of literature. I found that, first, when controlled properly, e-cigarettes do not pose significant harm to the human body. Second, the market has great potential. We have the opportunity to change society; with our wisdom and creativity, we can change the world. Gippro is committed to being a food-grade product. We are the first and only e-cigarette company in China to achieve food-grade certification in Japan. We further refined the e-liquid to eliminate harmful substances, which took about six months to pass testing. After passing the tests, it became much easier; compared to Japan, the testing process in China is quite smooth. Initially, Gippro products were completely nicotine-free, aiming to provide a healthy alternative for smokers. However, some smokers may not choose nicotine-free products, so we adopted a compromise approach by using low-nicotine e-liquids.

The Big Vape Family: You have been working hard to make Gippro products healthier, and you mentioned the logic of smoking alternatives. What are your thoughts on the recent legislative process in Hong Kong regarding smoking alternatives?
Gippro vape distribution Liang Ming: Both the UK and the US have a supportive attitude towards legislation. Developed countries have a long-term monitoring process for e-cigarettes, and the government has a clear understanding of this industry, so they legislate and provide relevant products within a beneficial scope. Therefore, raising this question can actually promote the development of the industry in Hong Kong. As long as someone proposes it, it means the issue is open for discussion and research. I don’t see this as a bad thing. Moreover, this is not a new concept; transitioning from prohibition to openness is a necessary process.

The Big Vape Family: How did you gather everyone together to form a team?

Liang Ming: Our team started relatively late, but once we got going, we developed well, mainly because we specialize in electronic products, giving us a higher starting point than other brands. Our products are not like other products that lean towards traditional e-cigarettes. Early in our entrepreneurial journey, we benchmarked against IQOS, GLO, and Ploom. In April 2018, we negotiated cooperation with Japan Tobacco, which clearly stated that they allowed and encouraged us to label our products as supporting PLOOM TECH cartridges. In Japan, 95% of our users use PLOOM TECH. This goal brought everyone together.

The Big Vape Family: Will non-smokers choose Gippro in the future?

Liang Ming: There is a high possibility. For many potential smokers and young smokers, the choice may not be smoking but rather a fashion statement or a habit. Many smokers are fully capable of breaking free from nicotine dependence, and we aim to provide a healthier product to help them achieve that. We also hope to assist more potential smokers in not becoming smokers.

Liang Ming: For us, the most significant achievement is successfully establishing a foothold in China. Previously, we focused on the Japanese market, and we only entered China around August 2018, but the market response has been very positive. This is because the Chinese market is now at a tipping point, allowing all aspects to exceed our expectations in just a month.

Liang Ming: For us, the focus is more on product planning. There will be more iterative products appearing in the Chinese, Japanese, and European markets, and products planned for release next year are already in development. We hope to seize the market's explosive growth period and meet market demands with quality products. The Japanese market is relatively mature, so product quality is the most important factor.

Liang Ming: Japan is our base, the most stable market, but the ceiling is relatively low. China and the US remain the largest sales markets, and the opening of the HNB market in China and the US presents a significant opportunity. In contrast, each European country has different policies, and there is a certain accumulation regarding the overall development of e-cigarettes, so we need to consider more about user habits rather than policy reasons.

Gippro vape distribution Liang Ming: Overall, Japan has a relatively relaxed policy environment, and there is a high acceptance of technology and fashion products. The government encourages tobacco companies to invest more in research and development, and in the foreseeable future, it will continue to lead the e-cigarette industry as a trendsetter. However, the e-liquid market is another extreme; due to regulations on nicotine-containing e-liquids, there will not be significant improvements in the short term in Japan. Some lawmakers have proposed policies to open nicotine salt regulations.

Liang Ming: My personal suggestion is to introduce relevant regulations as soon as possible, which would be more beneficial for the industry's development.
