What are the common side effects of using e-cigarettes?

Coughing

This is especially common when using an e-cigarette for the first time, particularly when vaping with more powerful devices, such as high-vapor devices. About 30% of people will cough at first. After a period of adjustment, most of them can adapt to this issue. Among that 30%, only about 10% of smokers have persistent coughing symptoms, about 40% no longer experience it, and about 50% have only occasional coughing. What causes coughing? When vaping, the atomization of e-liquid can irritate the tiny hair-like structures in the airway called cilia. The side effect is coughing. When we quit smoking, these substances gradually recover, and this symptom will disappear after the body adapts.

Dry throat / dry nose / dry mouth

These symptoms may be caused by propylene glycol or nicotine in e-liquid. Propylene glycol is a colorless, odorless, and nearly tasteless molecule. It is made up of three carbon atoms, eight hydrogen atoms, and two oxygen atoms. Technically, it is an alcohol. Propylene glycol can absorb moisture from the surrounding environment. When vaping, it affects our mouth and throat. If you are sensitive to it, vaping may become very unpleasant.

Another possibility is that nicotine is the cause. Nicotine is the main ingredient that determines throat hit, but if our nicotine level is too high, it may lead to a dry throat. However, since most e-cigarette users smoked before vaping and are already used to nicotine, this is less likely.

Headache

Headache is another common side effect of vaping. Only a very small number of new vapers experience this. Long-time smokers rarely have headaches. The most likely culprit is dehydration. This is due to the moisture-absorbing properties of propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin. So if you have this issue, it is recommended to drink an appropriate amount of water while vaping.

Dizziness / nausea

It is unlikely to get nicotine poisoning from vaping, but one very common issue is having too much nicotine. The biggest sign of reaching this point is feeling unwell. If we notice this during long vaping sessions, it is actually our body telling us to stop vaping for a while. Based on the experience of seasoned vapers around us, this nausea gradually worsens, so it is best to take a break as soon as it starts. This way, it will ease quickly and you will not develop other initial symptoms: vomiting. If you vape too much, you may get a headache, but by the time we feel nauseous, we can already avoid worse situations.
