On November 15, Sarah Jakes, chair of the New Nicotine Alliance (NNA), called for new approaches to seek safer alternatives to cigarettes at the Royal Society's e-cigarette summit.

Jakes pointed out that misinformation about safer cigarette alternatives is currently being driven by unreasonable bans and regulations, which is detrimental to the improvement of public health.

The public needs accurate and complete information from public health authorities,” Jakes said. “The vast majority of the public are not scientists, so they will choose what they believe to be trustworthy sources of information. However, when authoritative agencies and experts present conflicting views, the public becomes confused about whom to believe.”

Jakes highlighted the intense debate currently happening in the U.S. regarding e-cigarettes, where the truth about e-cigarettes has been obscured, replaced by moral posturing that offers no positive significance for American smokers.

The vast majority of e-cigarette users are not recognized; they live normal lives, but when labeled as “vapers,” they are often viewed through a biased lens, a result of the spread of misinformation about e-cigarettes.

“As long as the obvious controversy continues, the public will only believe what they see with their own eyes, and the information they see about e-cigarettes will be bans, restrictions, warning labels, and things that look like smoking. Such misunderstandings are harmful in many ways. They will lead the public to be intolerant of e-cigarettes, supporting restrictive policies, which in turn creates more misunderstandings and intolerance. This causes many smokers to be unaware of the significance of transitioning from cigarettes to e-cigarettes,” said Chair Sarah Jakes.

Smokers and e-cigarette users are not just numbers in a dataset; they are real people and should not be pawns in the political power games between different factions in the public health community. We need a new cigarette alternative to improve smokers' health and save more lives. E-cigarettes, due to their lack of combustion, have no tar, no carcinogens, and no secondhand smoke, making them more aligned with consumer demands compared to traditional tobacco products, and have grown rapidly in recent years.

According to surveys by public health departments, in many countries, including the UK and the US, e-cigarettes are the most popular smoking cessation aids among smokers and have effectively helped reduce smoking rates. The emergence of e-cigarettes is to provide smokers with a healthier way to smoke, meeting the health demands of people in this era.
