Why Is a Vaping Device Leaking E-Liquid?

Many beginners know little about vaping devices, and if they’re not careful during use, problems like atomizer leaking can occur. So why does a vaping device leak? China Vaping News explains in detail below. Why does a vaping device leak? 1. Filling too f
Many beginners have limited knowledge about e-cigarettes, and a small mistake during use can lead to issues like leaking e-liquid from the atomizer. So, why do e-cigarettes leak? Here’s a detailed explanation from Chinese e-cigarette news.

1. Refilling too quickly or overfilling (a common mistake for beginners)

Some novice users tend to rush when refilling, adding too much e-liquid too quickly, which can saturate the atomizer or cause some e-liquid to enter the base without being absorbed. Overfilling can also lead to leaks.

Solution: Try not to overfill! Generally, do not exceed 2/3 of the tank's capacity. It’s better to add a little at a time, refill after finishing, and avoid overfilling for convenience. This is determined by the structure and working principle of the atomizer. The e-liquid in the tank seeps through the atomizer's small holes into the atomizer core, which then heats the e-liquid to produce vapor. If overfilled, the air pressure inside the atomizer is low, causing more e-liquid to seep into the atomizer core under gravity, making it easier to leak from the mouthpiece or into the mouth.

2. Incorrect usage

Many users have a habit of blowing into the atomizer, which is incorrect.

Firstly, the structure of pre-filled and dripping atomizers is different. Blowing into a pre-filled atomizer for a long time can sometimes push e-liquid into the base, combined with accumulated condensation, causing leaks.

Solution: Avoid blowing into the mouthpiece. If you hear gurgling sounds while vaping, it indicates condensation inside the vapor pathway. In this case, tilt the mouthpiece down and shake it a few times to expel the liquid; blowing into it will not solve the problem.

3. Missing or damaged sealing O-rings

The sealing O-rings are the most likely components to be lost or damaged during use. If the sealing O-ring that contacts the atomizer core and base is missing or damaged, it can also lead to leaks.

Solution: When unscrewing the atomizer for refilling, do so gently and avoid touching the sealing O-ring. If you accidentally remove it, carefully reinstall it after refilling. If it’s lost or damaged, replace it with a new atomizer (the sealing O-ring from an old atomizer can be saved for backup).

4. Loose threads at the atomizer connection

The refilling part of the atomizer and the battery connection are sealed with O-rings and threads. If the threads are not tightened, the O-ring will not be compressed, failing to create a seal, which can cause e-liquid to seep from the mouthpiece or the battery connection.

Solution: After tightening the threads, give it a slight additional turn until it can’t be turned anymore to ensure everything is securely tightened.

5. Incorrect usage and excessive or rapid inhalation leading to e-liquid entering the mouth

Many beginners often complain about e-liquid entering their mouths, suspecting it’s a quality issue with the e-cigarette. In fact, this is largely due to a lack of understanding of how to use e-cigarettes. In such cases, aside from a few genuine quality issues, most are caused by excessive or rapid inhalation. Unlike traditional cigarettes, where stronger pulls lead to faster burning and more smoke, with e-cigarettes, longer inhalation produces more vapor.

Solution: When using an e-cigarette, do not tilt the mouthpiece downwards; instead, hold it at a 45-degree angle upwards. Inhale steadily and gently. Since e-cigarettes do not require combustion, the inhalation strength should ensure that the vaporized smoke is drawn into the mouth (to take larger puffs, just inhale for a longer time). If the inhalation is too strong or too fast, it’s easy to draw in condensation or unvaporized e-liquid.

6. Long-term storage

Leaving e-liquid in the atomizer unused for a long time can also cause leaks. Most pre-filled atomizers use a negative pressure oil guiding structure, and prolonged storage can lead to continuous oil guiding due to the pressure inside the atomizer, causing excess e-liquid to accumulate and seep into the base.

Solution: Each time you refill, try to add according to your usage to ensure that the e-liquid added is consumed on the same day. If you need to store it for a long time, unscrew the atomizer and expel the e-liquid inside.

Additionally, occasionally drawing e-liquid into the mouth from the mouthpiece is not considered a leak; this is usually condensation formed from "vapor steam." As mentioned above, the solution is to tilt the mouthpiece down to expel any residual liquid, then use a paper towel twisted into a rope to wipe it clean.
