According to data recently released by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Office on Smoking and Health, although the proportion of teenagers who smoke has continued to decline in recent years, the rate of e-cigarette use has been rising.

Each year, the CDC conducts the National Youth Tobacco Survey. After tracking 20,000 students who participated in the 2013 survey, it found that 4.5% of young people had used e-cigarettes for more than 30 days, showing rapid growth compared with last year’s figure of 2.8%. In addition, the proportion of young people trying e-cigarettes for the first time also increased, rising from 10% in the same period last year to 12% this year.

Among the 20,000 students surveyed, more than 46% said they had used e-cigarettes before. Although the use of traditional tobacco and cigars declined, overall tobacco use remained relatively stable, with no major changes in the broader trend.
