Central Government Signals Strong Attention to Research on Novel Tobacco Products Such as E-Cigarett
On August 18, 2014, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China, President Xi Jinping, chaired the seventh meeting of the Central Financial and Economic Leading Group to study the implementation of the innovation-driven development strategy. Xi elaborated on the basic requirements for implementing this strategy and proposed four points. New tobacco products are emerging strategic products in the tobacco industry, and developing new tobacco products is a major strategic issue concerning the future development of the industry. Therefore, tobacco enterprises should increase their understanding and awareness of new tobacco products, take early measures, and promote technological innovation. Currently, tobacco enterprises should prepare for the future by focusing on the technology tracking and research of new tobacco products such as “heated tobacco, e-cigarettes, oral tobacco, and chewing tobacco,” actively promoting technological innovation, improving product research and development levels, laying a solid foundation for tobacco enterprises to achieve new breakthroughs at a new starting point, and creating an upgraded version of Chinese tobacco to contribute to the comprehensive construction of a moderately prosperous society and the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.<\/p>
First, focus on development and firmly grasp the correct direction.
Second, strengthen incentives and vigorously gather innovative talents.
Third, deepen reforms and establish a sound system and mechanism.
Fourth, expand openness and comprehensively strengthen international cooperation.
Tobacco enterprises must liberate their minds, keep pace with the times, be enterprising, innovate practically, manage efficiently, and be pragmatic and effective. In particular, they must implement the innovation-driven development strategy, focusing on technological innovation to reduce the tar and other harmful components in tobacco products, enhance the core competitiveness of Chinese cigarettes, accelerate the formation of a competitive market structure, effectively enhance brand core competitiveness and corporate competitiveness, continuously improve the overall efficiency and scientific development level of the industry, promote the sustainable and healthy development of the tobacco industry, and make new contributions to the economic and social development of our country, creating new and greater glories for the Chinese Dream.<\/p>
