New FDA Rules Are Coming: Will the Vaping Industry Be Reshuffled?

Recently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has drafted three new regulations: Premarket Tobacco Product Applications (PMTA), nicotine content limits, and restrictions on e-liquid flavors. If these regulations are passed, the e-cigarette industry will undoubtedly undergo significant changes.

Premarket Tobacco Product Applications (PMTA)

For experienced e-cigarette shop owners, the application and approval process for tobacco products entering the market is not surprising, but now even those who enjoy traditional cigarettes should pay attention. The FDA issued a warning in 2016 regarding tobacco-related products, stating that to legally sell these products, applications must be submitted to the FDA by August 2018. However, the FDA has now extended the deadline to 2022 to give shop owners more time to update their products to meet the new standards and also to allow the FDA more time to study these devices and e-cigarettes.
New FDA regulations coming, reshuffling the e-cigarette industry The FDA has stated that its goal is to make tobacco products less toxic, less appealing, and less addictive. While this will eliminate many e-cigarette manufacturers, those that survive in the market will be the highest quality products. This aligns with the original intention of e-cigarettes: to serve as a healthier alternative to traditional cigarettes.

By 2022, manufacturers will need to obtain FDA approval for their products before they can continue to sell them legally. Reports indicate that the FDA is also seeking to enforce these regulations with "inspectors" to ensure product compliance. While regulatory restrictions on the cannabis industry are not new, this is a new initiative for e-cigarettes.

Nicotine Content Limits

Another initiative launched by the FDA earlier this year is to limit the nicotine content in each cigarette or e-cigarette. Their goal is to "help" smokers quit their dangerous habits and prevent new smokers from becoming addicted, potentially saving tens of thousands of lives each year.

This initiative by the FDA could have a significant impact on companies that develop their own e-liquids. Some skeptics have begun to question whether smokers will seek nicotine from other sources to increase the concentration in cigarettes; others worry that this could ultimately lead to a ban on all liquid nicotine. Perhaps, like the cannabis industry, the tobacco industry will also leverage medical research to legitimize its various products.

Restrictions on E-liquid Flavors

To reduce the appeal of tobacco products to children, the FDA is considering banning certain flavors of e-liquids. Some speculate that they will completely ban all e-liquid flavors except for tobacco and menthol. The cannabis industry has recently implemented similar regulations, prohibiting the sale of products with candy-like flavors or those featuring cartoon characters. The wide variety of e-liquid flavors has made it easier for many smokers to transition from traditional cigarettes to e-cigarettes, but this benefit may not outweigh the FDA's concerns.

Everyone is welcome to leave comments expressing their optimism about the future of the e-cigarette industry.
