Should e-cigarettes be banned because they contain nicotine? The public debate surrounding e-cigarettes has never ceased; the U.S., Europe, and the global vaping community have all been caught in this storm. But have you noticed any major media outlets stepping forward to expose or comment on the current media storm? Even the most proactive advocates for e-cigarettes merely counter with some favorable research theories. However, recently, the Financial Times has taken a stand.

FT Chinese, as the only non-English website of the Financial Times, published an article today titled "Nicotine is Healthier than Tobacco," which elaborates on its exclusive views regarding the disputes surrounding e-cigarettes. We have summarized and shared their perspectives.

Is the essence of opposing e-cigarettes a resistance to nicotine?

For the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) in the U.S., they were misled by tobacco companies for decades regarding the dangers of tobacco. Now, the FDA is like a frightened bird; they fear that e-cigarettes will evolve into the next scandal where an industry fools them. Nicotine is indeed harmful, especially to teenagers. However, the Financial Times believes the FDA should "calm down" and learn from the regulatory attitudes of Germany and the UK. Tobacco may take human lives, but that does not mean nicotine will, nor does it mean e-cigarettes will.
Should e-cigarettes be banned because they contain nicotine? Moreover, when it comes to the harm to teenagers, nicotine is harmful, but so is caffeine! Even the most popular Nespresso from Nestlé abroad has never labeled any warnings. It is important to note that the U.S. has a long-standing coffee consumption habit, and the reaction to nicotine seems overly aggressive; we should implement better regulations and encourage adult smokers to use vaping devices.

Health advocates are overly aggressive

From the known research results on e-cigarettes, they are still much less harmful than traditional cigarettes. Should health advocates adopt a more objective attitude towards e-cigarettes instead of using various harsh warnings to scare people? Objectively speaking, if we cannot accept a new thing that has not been thoroughly researched, then our mindset is too narrow, especially since it was created for harm reduction.

Currently, companies like Philip Morris, the parent company of Marlboro, are seeing their stock prices continue to decline, indicating that many smokers around the world have effectively quit smoking. This is believed to be related to the emergence of practical and effective smoking alternatives (such as vaping devices). Why should the FDA and various advocates be so targeted?

Views from large tobacco companies
Should e-cigarettes be banned because they contain nicotine? For e-cigarette companies like JUUL, which are heavily targeted by the FDA, the CEO of Philip Morris stated at the company's annual investor day, "We don't care about JUUL," but according to the Financial Times, they actually do care. Otherwise, IQOS would not be launching a product similar to JUUL's small device, MESH, this year.

Moreover, according to recent news, the latest generation of IQOS, IQOS 3 and IQOS 3 Multi, which we previously exposed, will be launched in Japan and South Korea within a week and in Europe and the U.S. in November. We believe we will learn more information about it soon. This indicates that smoking alternatives will be the future of the tobacco industry; continuous suppression will only backfire and fail to achieve the desired effect.

E-cigarettes are a trend, and the future tobacco market will increasingly lean towards harm reduction through alternatives. As Philip Morris's development plan states, a smoke-free life is the future.
