Traditional Chinese medicine vaping: Guangzhou Pharma Baiyunshan launches herbal vaping devices

Smoking and health can be adversaries, with the lungs being the most affected. However, as electronic cigarettes emerge, a domestic pharmaceutical company has actively entered the e-cigarette industry, surprisingly selling products under a lung-care brand.

Recently, Guangzhou Pharmaceutical Baiyunshan, a leading domestic pharmaceutical enterprise, announced its entry into the e-cigarette sector and officially launched its herbal e-cigarettes.

It is reported that this herbal e-cigarette is a collaboration between the "Pangao Shou" brand under Guangzhou Pharmaceutical Baiyunshan and the "Xing Huxi" brand, which has previously won the German IF Design Award.

Pangao Shou is a century-old lung-care brand under Guangzhou Pharmaceutical Baiyunshan. Public information shows that Pangao Shou was established in the 16th year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty (1890) and primarily produces traditional Chinese medicine for cough relief, recognized as one of the first "Chinese Time-Honored Brands" by the State Council.

As is well known, with the increasing awareness of personal health, the harmful effects of smoking, especially on lung health, have become deeply ingrained in public consciousness. So, what is the rationale behind a lung-care brand selling "lung-damaging" products?

It is understood that the herbal e-cigarette launched by Pangao Shou contains neither tobacco leaves nor e-liquid but rather traditional Chinese herbal medicine!

"Xing Liliang" is based on natural taurine, with ginseng as the main ingredient and other herbal plant materials as supplements, stimulating dopamine secretion while providing energy to the body; "Xing Shuchang" is based on tea leaves and theanine, with sour jujube seeds and ginseng as the main ingredients, and other herbal plant materials as supplements, primarily soothing emotions while continuously stimulating dopamine secretion.

In simple terms, according to Pangao Shou's promotion, their e-cigarettes meet the needs for refreshment and relaxation after smoking while also caring for the respiratory tract, without the nicotine, tar, and carbon monoxide found in traditional tobacco.

In fact, the practice of incorporating herbal materials into cigarettes has been a trend among smokers for several years.

Produced by Sichuan Tobacco, containing "Chuanbei Loquat" fragrance beads.

As early as March 2011, Professor Xiao Bingmei from Hunan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine attempted to add over a dozen traditional Chinese medicines, including lily, polygonatum, licorice, and dried tangerine peel, into e-cigarette cartridges, which were adopted by the Hunan Smoking Cessation Association and planned for promotion in Changsha, Hunan.

At that time, some pharmacies in cities like Shandong also specifically marketed these "herbal cigarettes" to consumers seeking smoking cessation products, categorizing them as "healthcare products."

However, this type of cigarette with added herbal ingredients gradually faded from the market due to a lack of consumer interest, until it was almost forgotten.

Now, the Pangao Shou brand from Guangzhou Pharmaceutical Baiyunshan is leveraging its "traditional expertise" to enter the e-cigarette market, attempting to achieve a shortcut through traditional herbal medicine and capture market share in the e-cigarette sector. Whether this is truly a "new bottle for old wine" and whether it will succeed or fail remains to be seen in the market.
