According to a report by Tobacco Online, the Smoke-Free World Foundation (FSFW) has launched two online processes aimed at providing information and guidance for the foundation's long-term research initiatives.
The first process is a public consultation period to solicit opinions on research priorities. The second process requests letters of intent to determine the scope of donations in advance, which will help assess the research areas most likely to accelerate the end of smoking.
Currently, researchers, policymakers, smokers, and others with relevant experience or expertise are invited to participate.
Dr. Derek Yach, founder and president of FSFW, stated: "We encourage everyone interested in reducing smoking-related deaths and diseases to share insightful opinions and creative suggestions regarding our research focus. In particular, we are looking for new ideas, fresh thinking, and innovative collaborations beyond the traditional tobacco control community to make solid progress towards a smoke-free world."
A recent FSFW press release stated that since the foundation's establishment in September, its leadership has been gathering input from public health experts worldwide, including major conferences, one-on-one meetings, and research workshops hosted by the foundation.
"Through discussions, it has become clear that before the foundation issues a large-scale research proposal request in 2018, some potential research areas need more detailed review and development. To prepare for launching a series of radical research programs in 2018, the foundation is now accepting early review grant letters of intent to gather more information on potential research topics related to smoking cessation, harm reduction, and alternative livelihoods for tobacco farmers. Detailed information about the grants is available on the foundation's website smokefreeworld. The letters of intent will be released on December 11, marking the first step in the application process, with preliminary review grants to be awarded in January."
