Especially this year, with the pod system market booming and new products appearing one after another, it can be absolutely overwhelming. It’s also difficult to choose an e-cigarette that offers both good quality and good value. Here, we’ll provide some information as a reference to help you when buying an e-cigarette. The following brands are listed in no particular order. We’re only discussing brands that are relatively easy to find through current purchase channels, and that most people looking to switch from cigarettes or quit smoking will likely consider.

　　RELX 　　A true internet-famous product and the domestic e-cigarette brand that has raised the most funding so far. The founding team has a strong internet-industry background, and the packaging, hand feel, and design all match the price. The main area for improvement is the flavor performance; otherwise, there’s not much to criticize.

　　Price: If you want to buy one, just wait for brand promotions. This brand frequently runs discount campaigns on major e-commerce platforms, and with the help of various coupon apps, you can sometimes get one for a very low price.

　　Flavor: You’ll know once you try it. It does provide throat hit, but the flavor blending could still be improved. Overall, it’s worth the money if purchased at a promotional price.

　　Laan

　　An Apple-style product with excellent design aesthetics. If you care about looks and want something stylish, it’s a top choice. Aside from that, there isn’t much else to strongly recommend.

　　Comment: If it wants to look like an Apple-inspired product, the quality should be close to that standard too. After all, this isn’t a disposable e-cigarette. If it can solve the leakage issue and the short half-month lifespan, this product could still be worth looking forward to.

　　VPO

　　It claims to be a product from the future, but in terms of design, flavor, and form factor, it doesn’t offer much that feels new compared with products like MT, BO, and PHIX, which have already been on the market for a while. That said, VPO does have a notable background.

　　Comment: Use RELX as a reference; the overall strategy is basically the same—spending heavily to acquire users. Paid reviews are everywhere, while real user feedback is hard to verify. Overall, the money spent roughly matches the product’s price, but it lacks a true brand identity. In actual use, it doesn’t feel very “future” at all.

　　Xiao Latiao E-cigarette 　　Produced by Hong Kong-listed Boton Group, this product keeps up with design trends. Its new packaging uses a piano-key concept and is arguably one of the most artistic e-cigarette package designs around. It offers a relatively wide range of flavors. What deserves special mention is that Boton Group is a leader in China’s flavor and fragrance industry; many listed companies and China Tobacco entities source flavorings from them. Their e-liquid is probably among the closest to traditional cigarette flavor, making it a pod system better suited to people trying to quit smoking.

　　Comment: The piano-key design makes it one of the most artistic e-cigarettes in the industry. It is simple, convenient, and tastes good, matching current demand in the pod system segment. I was fortunate enough to try it, and the e-liquid may be the best among the several products mentioned here. The downside is that it’s too popular and often out of stock.

　　Super Feeling

　　Super Feeling is a typical e-commerce-driven product. Buyers tend to regret it. It has one of the highest rates of manipulated sales on major platforms, and its consumables repurchase rate is under 5%... which tells you how extreme the sales inflation is.

　　Comment: If you really want to buy it, ask your friends how many of them have actually used this product. If even one person has, then maybe you can consider it!

　　Ovancl

　　It claims to be an Italian brand, but its actual production base is in Changzhou, Jiangsu, China. Still, it is a product made by people who are seriously building a brand. Its flavor performance and workmanship are trustworthy. The price is a bit high; it’s a domestic brand packaged as an imported one, but the quality is at least genuinely solid.

　　Comment: It has a complete design and R&D philosophy, and the company is patiently building the brand. Aside from the somewhat inflated price, it’s generally acceptable.

　　The following brands won’t be listed individually. They are e-commerce-style products and not worth considering.

　　Yixin, Tansuo, Enkang, Hualimen.

　　To determine whether a product is being seriously developed as an e-cigarette, or is just using e-commerce tactics to make quick money, you can refer to the following points:

　　1. The product line is either overly diversified with no clear system or customization, or extremely limited.

　　2. Consumables sales clearly do not match real-world logic (a normal ratio is roughly consumables:set kits = 1:5).

　　About box mods and large-vapor products

　　As for high-vapor or box-mod products, there isn’t much to say. It’s already the end of 2018, and China’s e-cigarette regulations are about to be introduced. Based on an understanding of the initial draft, these products are not recommended for the following reasons:

　　1. Don’t buy products above 40W; this type of product is about to fade from the market.

　　2. The ultimate purpose of e-cigarettes is still smoking cessation and cigarette replacement.
