Vape players often mention mouth-to-lung and direct-to-lung inhaling, which beginners often find confusing. These are the two most common inhalation methods, and different methods provide users with different experiences.

The mouth-to-lung method is very similar to the smoking technique we use with traditional cigarettes, while direct-to-lung is closer to the inhalation method used with water pipes.
Additionally, different devices, atomizers, and output power determine whether a device is suitable for mouth-to-lung or direct-to-lung inhaling; whether you want to experience the wonderful flavors of e-liquid or maximize vapor production, different inhalation methods will yield different results.
    Mouth-to-Lung
The mouth-to-lung method is the same as our daily smoking method, where users first draw vapor from the atomizer into their mouth and then inhale additional air to bring the vapor into their lungs. In earlier times, due to technological limitations, most electronic cigarette users adopted this method.
Compared to the direct-to-lung method, vapor tends to linger longer in the user’s mouth during mouth-to-lung inhaling, allowing for a more nuanced flavor experience. Since both cigar and cigarette users employ the mouth-to-lung method, most players switching to electronic cigarettes also prefer this method.
When using the mouth-to-lung method, most users choose higher-resistance atomizer devices, such as Kayfun or Nautilus atomizers, with output power generally controlled below 15W. To match these devices, users also tend to select e-liquids with higher PG and nicotine content to create an inhalation experience similar to traditional cigarettes.
Differences, pros and cons of mouth-to-lung and direct-to-lung vaping Advantages of Mouth-to-Lung
Due to the slow inhalation, the evaporation speed of the e-liquid is relatively slow, allowing for a longer usage time from the same amount of e-liquid.
Mouth-to-lung devices do not require high output power, which avoids overheating during use.
Since the method is similar to traditional smoking, it is more favored by users switching from cigarettes.
The mouth-to-lung method allows vapor to linger longer in the user’s mouth, enhancing the flavor experience of the e-liquid.
    Disadvantages of Mouth-to-Lung
Due to the lower output power during mouth-to-lung inhaling, the vapor volume is smaller, and the throat hit is weaker compared to direct-to-lung inhaling.
Currently, dripping atomizers and high-power atomizers have gradually taken over the mainstream market, making the mouth-to-lung method, which is designed for low-power devices, seem somewhat outdated.
   Direct-to-Lung
As the name "direct-to-lung" suggests, this inhalation method involves users inhaling vapor directly from the atomizer into their lungs, similar to deep breathing. The dense vapor instantly fills the lungs, providing a sensation similar to using a water pipe. The direct-to-lung method is commonly seen with dripping atomizers or sub-ohm atomizers.
Direct-to-lung inhaling provides users with a more intense experience, as the large volume of vapor offers a richer and fuller flavor experience. Additionally, since a large amount of e-liquid is vaporized instantly, the cooling design of the atomizer becomes crucial; overheated vapor does not provide a good experience. Due to the larger vapor volume, the throat hit during direct-to-lung inhaling is also more pronounced, and most users who use this method tend to choose e-liquids with lower nicotine content.
As mentioned, most users who prefer direct-to-lung inhaling choose dripping atomizers or sub-ohm atomizers, such as Kennedy or Kanger Subtank. In terms of e-liquid selection, players also tend to favor e-liquids with higher VG content and lower nicotine levels to reduce throat irritation.
Differences, pros and cons of mouth-to-lung and direct-to-lung vaping Advantages of Direct-to-Lung
Inhaling vapor directly into the lungs provides users with a more intense experience, and they also enjoy a fuller and richer vapor experience.
Direct-to-lung is the best method for users who want to maximize vapor production.
     Disadvantages of Direct-to-Lung
When selecting e-liquids, one must be cautious; too much PG and nicotine can lead to an overwhelming throat hit. Additionally, dry hits caused by poor wicking can become a nightmare.
