Are disposable e-cigarettes harmful? In 2018, disposable e-cigarettes suddenly surged and quickly became popular in the vaping market.

An article on an overseas website researching disposable e-cigarettes listed the following factors, all of which have a major impact on the environment when switching from smoking to disposable e-cigarettes:

2. Reducing the harm cigarettes cause to human health.

3. Preventing trees from being cut down.

4. Preventing large amounts of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere.

5. Preventing chemicals from leaking into soil, oceans, lakes, and rivers.

Although the points above suggest that “switching from traditional cigarettes to disposable e-cigarettes can reduce a great deal of environmental harm,” and although Public Health England reports that “vaping is 95% less harmful to the human body,” making the benefits of e-cigarettes seem evident everywhere, have people overlooked the environmental issues caused by e-cigarettes?
Yogi Hale Hendlin of the Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education at the University of California, San Francisco, said:

“Although switching from smoking to e-cigarettes may have a positive environmental impact, ‘electronic product waste’ is a huge global problem. Whenever technology creates disposable e-cigarette products, it is essentially stealing environmental benefits from the future.”

“Environmental health should also be taken into account in public health policies surrounding e-cigarettes. Every stage of e-cigarette production may create potential environmental harm through mining, manufacturing, use, and waste disposal.”

He explained in a 2017 CDC study that in 2015, more than 58 million disposable e-cigarette products were sold in grocery stores and convenience stores worldwide. About 19 million of these products were designed for single use only. Researchers explained that the resulting electronic waste is often shipped from advanced countries to developing countries, bringing environmental harm related to waste processing, recycling, and incineration to poorer regions.
Compared with other types of vaping products, disposable vaping devices have undoubtedly played an important role in promotion and cigarette replacement, but their threat to the environment cannot be ignored.

After all, disposable e-cigarettes are products that are thrown away after use, and they contain many hard-to-process materials such as plastic and metal, especially the internal lithium battery. The production of lithium batteries requires chemical substances such as lithium cobalt oxide, copper, aluminum, and nickel. So if they are discarded casually, they can affect not only crops, but also soil and aquatic ecosystems.

Although e-cigarettes can replace traditional cigarettes and reduce harm to the human body, that alone should not come at the environment’s expense. After all, we only have one Earth. If the Earth is gone, tobacco control becomes meaningless.
