Recently, many anti-addiction pills sold on the market have been mixed with morphine and other toxic substances. Although they may suppress cravings, they are even more harmful. Licorice root: 8 liang Fritillaria cirrhosa bulb: 4 liang Eucommia bark: 4 liang

Use 6 jin of clean water with these three ingredients. Boil down to half the volume, then strain out the dregs with cloth. Add 1 jin of good brown sugar and cook into a paste.

Take 3 qian each time, mixed with warm water.

(Instructions) For the first 3 days, mix 1 qian of opium into each 1 liang of medicinal paste. On days 4, 5, and 6, add 8 fen of opium per liang of paste. On days 7, 8, and 9, add 6 fen. On days 10, 11, and 12, add 4 fen. On days 13, 14, and 15, add 2 fen. On days 16, 17, and 18, add 1 fen. After day 18, continue adding 1 fen per liang for another 7 days. After that, there is no need to add opium. Once the paste is finished, the addiction is said to end on its own, without discomfort or other ailments. It is described as a truly remarkable formula. After breaking the addiction, one must never use opium again. Cherish your time and preserve your vitality. This is earnestly advised. While taking the medicine to quit, avoid sour foods.

(Precautions) If some other illness arises during the quitting period, add 1 extra fen of opium per liang of paste according to the schedule, but do not add too much. Recovery will supposedly follow naturally, without risk. This remedy is said to have helped many people. Even those who smoked two or three liang of opium a day reportedly broke the addiction with a single course. Not only were there no complications, but their energy and health also improved. It is said to be extremely effective.

Note: This method was originally used for quitting opium. Since both are addictive substances, those trying to quit smoking may consider adapting it by substituting tobacco.
