E-cigarettes have rapidly gained a foothold in the market since their introduction, and the trend of "quitting smoking with e-cigarettes" has become quite popular. But can e-cigarettes really help people quit smoking?

The addiction of smokers to cigarettes is primarily due to nicotine addiction, which brings its own set of harms. While nicotine in moderation is not harmful to the body, long-term accumulation can place a significant burden on the lungs. Therefore, quitting smoking is essentially about reducing this addiction—specifically, reducing smokers' dependence on nicotine. E-cigarettes can serve as a substitute for traditional cigarettes, resulting in two outcomes: successful quitting or developing a new addiction to e-cigarettes.
Can e-cigarettes really help you quit smoking? The former is self-explanatory, but the latter is something every smoker can observe.

Whether an e-cigarette can help someone quit smoking and whether it will lead to an uncontrollable new addiction is largely related to the quality of the e-cigarette itself. Some e-cigarettes and vaporizers do not provide the desired throat hit, leading smokers to abandon them early on due to insufficient satisfaction. However, e-cigarettes that closely mimic the sensation of traditional cigarettes, like the IQOS device I previously used, tend to have a higher acceptance rate. Even for seasoned smokers like myself, using it does not feel too uncomfortable, making it easier to stick with.

Regarding nicotine addiction, based on my experience with IQOS (this is specific to this e-cigarette; I cannot guarantee the same for others), it gradually makes smokers realize that traditional cigarettes are not as enjoyable, even allowing them to detect the tar-like taste in traditional tobacco after prolonged use. This awareness is self-generated by the smoker, providing a degree of autonomy, making it easier to diminish the craving for nicotine.

I quit traditional cigarettes in less than two months. After checking online, I found that my duration is relatively long; many people quit in just over a month, possibly due to my long smoking history. Initially, I had a strong craving for IQOS after quitting traditional cigarettes, so I subconsciously tried to control it. However, I discovered a positive aspect—smokers who have just quit traditional cigarettes may crave e-cigarettes, but controlling that craving is not difficult since their history with e-cigarettes is not long, and they do not have the same accumulated dependence as with traditional cigarettes. Therefore, I managed to quit IQOS in less than a month, and I currently have no signs of relapse.

Thus, I believe e-cigarettes can indeed help with quitting smoking, but it is important to choose a cost-effective product and remember to persist in quitting e-cigarettes after quitting traditional cigarettes.
