The vapor produced by e-cigarettes creates a captivating effect, but many smokers still struggle to accept it psychologically. Besides the flavor being similar to cigarettes, they wonder if this vapor is as harmful as cigarette smoke. The main components of e-cigarette vapor

We often see users exhaling large clouds of vapor when using e-cigarettes, creating a "cloud nine" effect. But does this massive vapor lead to PM2.5 levels skyrocketing?

E-liquid produces a large amount of vapor through a heating coil. This vapor is generated through specific physical and chemical reactions. In previous articles, we pointed out that the main components of e-liquid are: water, nicotine, glycerin, propylene glycol, and flavorings. What substances do these components turn into under heating conditions?

1. Water

Water does not undergo a chemical reaction under heating conditions; it simply absorbs heat and turns into water vapor. When this vapor cools, it condenses into small liquid droplets, creating visible mist. Therefore, vapor contains a certain amount of water.

2. Nicotine

Nicotine in e-liquid is a crucial component of smoking alternatives. Nicotine vaporizes when heated by the coil. When the vapor enters the lungs, some nicotine is absorbed into the bloodstream, while the rest is expelled, meaning the vapor contains a certain amount of nicotine.

A study published in the journal "Nicotine and Tobacco Research" found that secondhand vapor from e-cigarettes still contains some nicotine, but it is reduced by ten times compared to traditional cigarettes. The nicotine in vapor exists in vapor form, posing relatively lower risks.

3. Glycerin and Propylene Glycol

Glycerin, chemically known as propylene glycol, has one more methyl group than propylene glycol, leading to different physical and chemical properties. Glycerin has a higher boiling point and flash point than propylene glycol, so under the same temperature conditions, an equal amount of propylene glycol burns or evaporates more completely, resulting in lower levels of propylene glycol in vapor; conversely, glycerin is present in higher amounts in vapor. This is why the proportions of these two substances in e-liquid significantly affect vapor size. Therefore, vapor contains a certain amount of propylene glycol and a higher amount of glycerin.

Both glycerin and propylene glycol are short-chain compounds that exist in liquid form and do not burn during heating. Thus, unlike traditional cigarettes, which produce carbon monoxide due to incomplete combustion, alcohols may produce aldehydes under catalytic conditions. The journal "Environmental Health Perspectives" has analyzed the levels of formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and acrolein in e-cigarettes.

Among them, formaldehyde represents formaldehyde, acetaldehyde represents acetaldehyde, and acrolein represents acrolein. Data indicates that e-cigarette vapor contains formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and acrolein, but in negligible amounts compared to traditional cigarettes.

4. Flavorings

The flavorings in different e-liquids vary, and most flavorings are aromatic compounds, making their reactions complex and difficult to quantify.

Particularly, "plant-extracted flavorings" require special attention, as their biggest risk when used in e-liquids is carbon fiber particles. All plant extracts contain a certain amount of carbon fiber particles, and current technology cannot completely remove them. While plant-extracted flavorings can be digested and absorbed as food additives, the situation is different when used in e-liquids. E-cigarettes can reach temperatures of 300-400 degrees Celsius during heating, while the carbonization temperature of carbon fiber is only 200 degrees Celsius. The carbon fibers can accumulate on the heating coil, leading to "carbon buildup." Some of this carbon may enter the vapor as carbon particles (which is somewhat similar to smog), while some may continue to oxidize into carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. However, flavorings are not present in high concentrations in e-liquids, and most flavorings are chemically synthesized, so there is no need for excessive concern.

5. Wick Cotton

There are three main types of wick cotton: organic cotton, medical cotton, and fiberglass.

Organic cotton and medical cotton do not produce harmful substances during use unless burned dry. However, fiberglass may produce fiberglass particles in the vapor during use. However, the amount present in e-cigarette vapor is not harmful to the human body.

PM2.5, also known as fine particulate matter, refers to solid particles with a diameter of less than 2.5 micrometers. Its chemical composition mainly includes organic carbon, elemental carbon, nitrates, and sulfates.

In contrast, e-cigarette vapor primarily consists of suspended liquid particles that evaporate quickly and do not fall under the PM2.5 category; trace amounts of carbon fiber particles will not cause PM2.5 levels to spike.

Discussing toxicity without considering dosage is unscientific. The harmful substances found in e-cigarette vapor, such as formaldehyde, are negligible compared to traditional cigarettes and do not pose a threat to human health. Honestly, the healthiest option is not to inhale anything at all. While e-cigarettes are less harmful than traditional cigarettes, if you want to be completely harm-free, it’s best to quit smoking altogether.
