To determine whether the use of e-cigarettes is related to attempts to quit smoking and successful cessation, a study titled "The Use of E-Cigarettes is Associated with Increased Attempts to Quit Smoking and Successful Cessation in the Past 12 Months" investigated smoking cessation attempts and outcomes from 2006 to 2016. Data extracted from two population-based surveys in the United States indicated that current e-cigarette use is indeed associated with an increase in attempts to quit smoking and successful cessation.

Researchers analyzed data from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) from 2006 to 2016 and the Tobacco Use Supplement to the Current Population Survey (TUS-CPS) from 2006-2007, 2010-2011, and 2014-2015 for the 25-44 age group. The data from NHIS showed a positive correlation between the number of e-cigarette users and the number of people attempting to quit smoking and succeeding, while TUS-CPS data produced similar results, indicating a significant association between e-cigarette use and attempts to quit smoking and successful cessation in the past 12 months.

The researchers noted that these findings are closely related to future tobacco policy decisions. However, just last week, a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) showed that smoking rates in the U.S. have reached an all-time low, but they refused to acknowledge that the use of e-cigarettes may have played a significant role in this decline.

The CDC attributes the continuous decline in smoking rates in the U.S. over the years to government tobacco control policies, although they acknowledge that many people in the U.S. are currently using e-cigarettes, they do not consider e-cigarettes to be a key factor in the reduction of smoking rates.

Meanwhile, a study based on the FDA-funded Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of e-cigarettes and smoking cessation assistance found that e-cigarettes are the preferred cessation aid among smokers. Does Using E-Cigarettes Help Improve Smoking Cessation Rates? "Our findings suggest that e-cigarettes are a more popular choice for quitting smoking than government-approved cessation medications, and as a cessation aid among American smokers, e-cigarettes are favored by a large segment of the quitting population. In the future, as e-cigarette products continue to evolve, making nicotine delivery closer to the experience of smoking cigarettes, they may play an even greater role in helping smokers quit," the PATH researchers concluded.

In fact, not only in the U.S., but also in the UK and many other countries, e-cigarettes have long become the most popular cessation aid among smokers. According to the latest report released by Public Health England, e-cigarettes remain the most popular cessation aid in the UK, with the report emphasizing that e-cigarettes increase the likelihood of successful cessation by about 50% and reduce health risks by at least 95%. As more people become concerned about health issues, the dangers of smoking are being increasingly recognized, and e-cigarettes, due to their lack of combustion, tar, carcinogens, and secondhand smoke, are more aligned with consumer demands compared to traditional tobacco products, gaining popularity in recent years.
