A new paper published in the "Expert Review of Respiratory Medicine" indicates that the aerosol emitted by e-cigarettes (EC) is safer than the smoke from combustible cigarettes, and the evidence supporting this is continuously increasing.

The impact of e-cigarette aerosol emissions on respiratory health: A narrative review led by Dr. Riccardo Polosa, director of the Center of Excellence for the Acceleration of Harm Reduction (CoEHAR), aims to provide a critical assessment of research on the effects of e-cigarettes on respiratory health.

"For smokers who want to take some health measures, this review indicates that switching to e-cigarettes is a very good option if they do not want to quit smoking or cannot quit completely. No one can prove that e-cigarettes are 100% safe, but all scientific studies indicate that e-cigarettes are safer than smoking," Polosa said.

Dr. Polosa added: "We, along with Public Health England and the Royal College of Physicians in London, agree that it is reasonable to state that the risks of e-cigarettes are at least 95% lower than smoking, and the risks may be lower than smoking altogether."

According to the findings, the lack of clear and accurate reporting in experimental studies has created confusion in the e-cigarette industry, leading to risks and health issues.

"The millions of deaths from smoking represent a continuing tragedy that must be fully considered in reasonable risk assessments," Polosa said. "We believe there is substantial evidence that replacing cigarettes with e-cigarettes is an effective method for controlling cigarette use. In recent years, adult smokers have come to understand that e-cigarettes pose less harm than combustible cigarettes."

The paper by Polosa et al. is the first attempt to provide reliable references to correct most misunderstandings and inform the public about how to improve the personal and societal health of smokers. All smokers have the right to know the real information about these products, including their potential risks and benefits.

The authors of this new study also found that smokers who switch from combustible cigarettes to e-cigarettes can effectively improve their smoking symptoms (coughing and phlegm) and reduce carbon monoxide levels. These results are particularly beneficial for smokers who completely switch from combustible cigarettes to e-cigarettes.

For smokers with conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), using e-cigarettes may be beneficial for these symptoms, but more data is needed to determine the impact of full e-cigarette use on lung function.

Dr. Polosa concluded: "The development of the industry urgently needs to be fully evaluated. Under normal usage conditions, e-cigarettes can have a more positive impact on human health, which is scientifically supported."
