What Do NTP, ENDS, and HNB Mean? 90% of People Don’t Know!

Every industry has its own jargon. If it’s Chinese, it’s still understandable, but pure English abbreviations can leave many people confused. Take vaping as an example: can you answer what NTP, ENDS, and HNB stand for? Probably 90% of vaping users are sti
Every industry has its own set of specialized terms. While it may be easier to understand in Chinese, purely English abbreviations can leave many people confused. For example, in the vaping industry, can you answer what "NTP, ENDS, and HNB" mean? It's estimated that 90% of people in the vaping community might be pretending to know but actually can't explain it clearly.
  NTP, ENDS, HNB
1. NTP stands for New Tobacco Products. Another term used is NGP, which stands for New Generation Products. The latter is often preferred by tobacco organizations and companies in public settings, possibly to avoid the word "tobacco" and prevent controversy.

New tobacco products are a new category of harm-reduction alternatives to smoking. Compared to traditional cigarette products, there are many types of new tobacco products, and their variety continues to increase with ongoing technological innovations. Currently, new tobacco products are mainly divided into three categories: aerosol/vapor electronic cigarettes, heated tobacco products, and smokeless tobacco products. Many outsiders mistakenly categorize aerosol/vapor electronic cigarettes and heated tobacco products as electronic cigarettes, which is a narrow view and shows a lack of research. From an official perspective, heated tobacco products and aerosol/vapor electronic cigarettes are classified as new tobacco products.

Currently, heated tobacco products and aerosol/vapor electronic cigarettes are the two most popular new tobacco products in the world. Their biggest difference is that the former contains specially formulated tobacco components in its pods, while the latter's core component is nicotine extract, primarily sourced from tobacco.

2. ENDS stands for Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems, which translates to aerosol/vapor electronic cigarettes. Its working principle is to use an atomizer to convert the liquid nicotine in the pod into vapor, achieving a smoking-like "cloud blowing" effect.

Currently, there are many brands of aerosol electronic cigarettes on the market, with the most notable being Juul, which is owned by Altria, holding a 35% stake, and is a sister company of Philip Morris. In China, various flavored electronic cigarettes are popular, with over a thousand manufacturers primarily producing aerosol electronic cigarettes.

3. HNB stands for Heat Not Burning Tobacco Products (devices), which translates to heated tobacco products (aerosol tobacco products). Its working principle involves inserting the pod into a low-temperature tobacco heater, which uses a heating element to bake at 300°C to achieve a real tobacco flavor and experience similar to smoking. Due to the closer taste of heated tobacco products to real cigarettes, they have higher acceptance.

Currently, heated tobacco products are typified by Philip Morris International's (PMI) IQOS, followed by Korean cigarette manufacturer KT&G's LIL, British American Tobacco's GLO, Japan Tobacco's Ploom, and other international tobacco giants, as well as domestic companies like Sichuan Zhongyan's Kuan Zhai Kung Fu, Yunnan Zhongyan's MC, Guangdong Zhongyan's MU+, Hubei Zhongyan's MOK, Heilongjiang Zhongyan's LOPATO, and private enterprises like Yanshen, Bodi, Green Yunda, and Aivibati offering corresponding products.
