You’ve Been Vaping for So Long, But Do You Really Understand It?

Whether vaping is harmful or not is never a conclusion about a single product in isolation; it is based on comparison. Without comparison, there is no meaningful assessment of harm. Experimental studies by major authoritative institutions have shown that
The debate over the harmfulness of electronic cigarettes is not just about one product; it is derived from comparisons. Without comparison, there is no harm. Research conducted by various authoritative institutions has shown that the harm of electronic cigarettes is far less than that of traditional cigarettes.

- Key Points -

Smokers, nicotine, reducing bodily harm, smoking alternatives

When we say "healthier," we are not referring to one product being healthy, but rather that electronic cigarettes are a healthier alternative compared to traditional cigarettes.

Therefore, the user group of electronic cigarettes consists of smokers who already have an addiction: on one hand, they cannot quit nicotine, and on the other hand, they want to reduce the harm of traditional cigarettes to their bodies. For nicotine-dependent smokers, electronic cigarettes are a good alternative.

It is clear that we need to distinguish between two groups of people:

Minors;

People who do not smoke.

Recently, there have been many discussions about the dangers of smoking: claims that the vapor from electronic cigarettes contains harmful formaldehyde. Coupled with some baseless exaggerations stating that "the harm of electronic cigarettes is no less than that of traditional cigarettes," this has stirred up a lot of controversy online.

So let's take a look at whether the vapor produced by e-liquid is really that scary:

About Vapor

The main components of e-liquid are propylene glycol, glycerin, nicotine, and flavorings, and the vapor is primarily produced by heating and atomizing these four substances.

About Formaldehyde

In our daily lives, we inevitably come into contact with formaldehyde. While the vapor from electronic cigarettes does contain trace amounts of formaldehyde, we need to discuss toxicity in relation to dosage.

What is formaldehyde? The human olfactory threshold for formaldehyde is typically 0.06-0.07 mg/m³; concentrations above this level will produce a pungent sour smell. If the formaldehyde content reaches the so-called 10+ mg/m³, the air will produce severe acidic irritant gases that are unbearable for the human body.

By the way, I have a background in industrial analysis and testing and have personally experienced the agony of breathing when formaldehyde levels are excessive.

According to data, we inhale a certain amount of formaldehyde in our daily lives, including from the atmosphere (0.02 mg), indoor air (0.5 mg-2 mg), and indoor sources of formaldehyde (1 mg-10 mg).

One pod provides about 400 puffs, lasting about a week, which is equivalent to only one-sixth of the amount of formaldehyde inhaled from outdoor air.

In another report provided by the US Environmental Protection Agency, the daily intake of formaldehyde should be controlled at no more than 0.2 mg per kilogram of body weight. Based on a standard adult weight of 60 kg, the daily intake of formaldehyde should not exceed 12 mg to avoid additional health impacts.

Why do some programs report such high formaldehyde levels?

This involves the type of electronic cigarette affecting the power output. The general public's initial perception is that electronic cigarettes are large-capacity tools that emit impressive amounts of vapor, referring to high-powered devices that can reach 200W and temperatures exceeding 400 degrees.

About Nicotine

It is well known that nicotine is an addictive substance, but it is not a carcinogen, which is entirely different from tar.

Nicotine itself is a natural substance found in tomatoes, eggplants, and goji berries, so there is no need to be overly concerned about it. A small amount of nicotine can be naturally metabolized by the body; it is just somewhat addictive.

Taking the original tobacco flavor pod as an example, the packaging indicates a nicotine content of 4%, meaning that each 1.8ml pod contains 4% nicotine, which is roughly equivalent to the nicotine amount in a traditional cigarette.

Finally, it must be emphasized again: minors are prohibited from using electronic cigarettes, and if you do not smoke, it is best not to try it!

The electronic cigarette industry is developing rapidly, and many non-compliant products are entering the market, which is unethical for both consumers and the industry. As a smoking alternative, it is necessary to be responsible for the health of smokers.
