Recently filed documents submitted to U.S. regulators show that San Francisco-based e-cigarette maker Juul Labs Inc. raised $785.2 million through bonds and stock. The e-cigarette manufacturer has been exploring new options to expand its global operations.
Even so, this latest fundraising activity by the e-cigarette maker was revealed just one day after media reports disclosed that the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) had been investigating Juul Labs Inc. for unfair marketing practices.
In addition, the filing submitted to regulators appears to be an expansion of data released earlier. In early August, the company was quoted as saying it had raised about $325 million through stock and bonds. Later, a person familiar with the matter disclosed the information anonymously because they were not authorized to speak publicly about it.
Despite facing a series of reviews and scrutiny in the United States over its e-cigarette products, Juul has remained widely popular among teenagers, and the company has expanded its business into many international markets including South Korea, the Philippines, and Indonesia.
