Introduction: South Korean scientists claim to have discovered a method to turn cigarette butts into materials for making energy storage devices, which can provide power for mobile phones and electric vehicles. According to a survey by the American anti-smoking organization—American Non-Smokers' Rights Organization, cigarette butts are the most common form of litter in the world, generating up to 765,000 tons of waste each year.

According to reports, South Korean scientists claim to have discovered a method to turn cigarette butts into materials for making energy storage devices, which can provide power for mobile phones and electric vehicles.

Researchers from Seoul National University recently published a paper in the journal Nanotechnology, explaining the process of converting cigarette filters into supercapacitors. Cigarette filters are primarily made of cellulose acetate fibers, which can pose environmental hazards when discarded.

The researchers stated: “Our research has shown that cigarette filters can be transformed into efficient carbon materials with just a simple step. This not only provides a green and environmentally friendly solution but also meets society's energy needs.”

Ultimately, these filters will be made into so-called supercapacitors, which scientists claim can store more power, charge faster, and last longer compared to ordinary capacitors. The researchers noted: “Due to low cost, high porosity, good electrical conductivity, and stability, carbon is considered an excellent material for making supercapacitors.”
