French Study: Teen Vape Users Are Unlikely to Switch to Cigarettes

March 17 news: According to Vapingpost, a recent French study set out to determine whether e-cigarette use increases the likelihood that young smokers will become daily smokers, but the results showed the opposite. Researchers analyzed retrospective data
On March 17, according to Vapingpost, a recent study conducted in France aimed to determine whether "vaping increases the likelihood of young smokers transitioning to daily cigarette smoking." However, the study results showed the opposite.

Researchers analyzed retrospective data from nearly 40,000 participants in the 2017 French national representative survey to examine the relationship between vaping and smoking. Among the 21,401 participants with a history of smoking, teenagers who reported having ever used vaping devices were less likely to transition to daily cigarette smoking by age 17.

The researchers found that this pattern remained consistent whether vaping was used before or after smoking initiation. They concluded that there is no evidence that vaping leads to smoking, stating, "Our findings show no evidence that individuals who have ever used vaping devices have an increased risk of daily smoking by age 17; they also experimented with vaping. Further research should employ causal inference methods to study the long-term effects of vaping on future smoking habits."
