Wuntun Vape Raises Tens of Millions in Pre-A, Launches Pod Product on Aug 19
Vaping brand WONTON has completed a Pre-A round worth tens of millions of yuan. The funding will go to product R&D and channel building, with its first pod product set to launch in China on August 19.
On August 15, WONTON Smart, the operating company behind the vaping brand WONTON, announced that it had completed a Pre-A funding round worth tens of millions of yuan. The round was invested by GF Xinde Investment, with Wave Capital serving as the exclusive financial adviser.
WONTON founder and CEO Huang Yu said the funding will be used for product R&D, channel development, and other initiatives. WONTON’s first-generation new pod product will officially go on sale in China on August 19.
Ao Xiaomin, executive deputy general manager of GF Xinde, said that after evaluating dozens of domestic vaping startups, GF Xinde highly recognized the WONTON management team’s product design, channel management, and brand operation capabilities, which were developed through experience at outstanding companies such as Apple China. He said he believes that with its comprehensive strengths in product, marketing, channels, and operations, together with GF Xinde’s capital support, WONTON will become a standout player in the vaping industry and bring greater value to users.
Founded in early 2019, WONTON focuses on the R&D, production, and sales of vaping devices. Its founding team comes from companies including Apple, Johnson & Johnson, Tencent, Cedar Holdings, and Lifesense Medical, and has many years of experience in product development, brand marketing, channel expansion, and operations management.
Huang Yu worked at Apple for nearly 10 years, serving as director of Apple China’s South Region and operations director of Apple Greater China’s enterprise business division, helping grow southern China sales from tens of millions of yuan to tens of billions. In 2015, he joined Lifesense Medical as COO, and in just six months led the company to become China’s No. 2 smart wearable brand by sales; in 2016, the company successfully completed an IPO on ChiNext.
Earlier this April, WONTON announced that it had completed an angel round financing worth tens of millions of yuan.
Huang Yu said that over the past more than eight months, from the end of 2018 to now, the WONTON team has been carefully refining its products and overcoming several key technical challenges in the industry. August 19 marks the debut of WONTON’s first-generation new product.
Commenting on the current intense competition in the vaping market, Huang Yu said this is actually WONTON’s potential advantage. Most mainstream vaping brands on the market, especially pod-based vaping devices and disposable mini vapes, focus heavily on marketing while neglecting product quality, showing little respect for user experience. Common industry problems include launching new products in just one or two months using generic ODM molds, low-end and rough manufacturing, poor-quality e-liquid, and severe pod leakage.
“If the first wave of brands has already educated users about what e-cigarettes are, WONTON hopes to show everyone what a good e-cigarette really is,” Huang Yu said.
To address the most frequently reported issue of pod leakage, WONTON uses a design that combines oil-core separation with dual condensation chambers. Before the pod is inserted for use, the oil-core separation technology prevents leakage even in high-pressure and high-temperature environments such as high altitude, 60°C warehouses, and car trunks. After the pod is inserted and used, the dual condensation chamber design securely locks in condensate, minimizing leakage to the greatest extent possible.
Huang Yu said that in terms of device design, WONTON applies the golden ratio principle and pairs it with a smooth, delicate iridescent baked finish to deliver a uniquely satisfying hand feel. The integrated metal body is inset with a finely crafted W-edged trim, combining texture and aesthetics.
WONTON is equipped with a high-capacity 450mAh battery, a Type-C charging port, and pharmaceutical-grade material at the mouthpiece. When a user takes 15 consecutive puffs, the device vibrates to indicate that the nicotine salt intake is equivalent to one cigarette, reminding users to moderate consumption. For its e-liquid, WONTON sources high-quality materials globally. Most flavors are developed in collaboration with experienced European perfumers and imported from the UK and the US, with TPD and MSDS certifications, while a smaller portion of flavors are developed with well-known domestic e-liquid manufacturers, ensuring food-grade safety standards.
