Starting in August, New Taipei, Taiwan, will prohibit people under the age of 18 from purchasing or using vaping devices.
The new regulation, passed on April 29, is expected to take effect on August 6.
In a statement, the city’s health department said that after the rule takes effect, anyone under 18 who uses or carries vaping devices will be required to attend a cessation program.
The department warned that violators who skip the program without a valid reason will face fines ranging from NT$2,000 (US$71) to NT$10,000.
Individuals or businesses that sell vaping devices to people under 18 will face fines of up to NT$100,000.
Current law defines minors as people under the age of 20, but an amendment passed last December lowers that age to 18, effective from 2023.
Meanwhile, the New Taipei City Health Department in Taiwan, China, stated that city regulations prohibit the manufacture, import, sale, display, and promotion of vaping products without the relevant permits.
The department said the maximum fine for violating this rule is NT$100,000, and businesses involved may be ordered to suspend operations or close down.
