According to a study by the UK Vaping Industry Association (UKVIA), since the UK banned menthol cigarettes, more than two-thirds of vape retailers have reported an increase in sales of menthol e-liquid.
Last year’s ban also prohibited the manufacture or sale in the UK of menthol filters, papers, and slim cigarettes, concluding a four-year phase-out that followed the 2017 ban on small packs of rolling tobacco and packs of 10 cigarettes.
The study shows that more than 70% of owners of brick-and-mortar and online retail stores said they had seen increased demand for menthol vaping products.
And although fruit e-liquids remain customers’ favorite, menthol is the second most popular flavor.
Independent analyst Tim Phillips said: “What we are witnessing in the UK after the combustible menthol ban is a sustained rise in the presence of menthol in vaping e-liquids, and it has now become one of the most important ingredients across all e-liquids.” at ECigIntelligence.
UKVIA Director General John Dunne said the findings clearly demonstrate the importance of vaping in helping smokers switch away from smoking, which Public Health England has recognized as far less harmful than combustible tobacco.
He said: “Our survey of retailers clearly shows that as menthol cigarettes were removed from sale, vape shops witnessed an increase in sales of the same flavor in e-liquid form.”
