Canada: New Vaping Regulations in Nova Scotia
In May, Nova Scotia approved a 20 mg/ml nicotine cap for vaping products, making it the first province in Canada to implement such a limit.
In May of this year, Nova Scotia approved a 20mg/ml nicotine limit on vaping products, making it the first province in Canada to implement such a restriction. This move was part of an amendment that took effect on April 1, prohibiting various flavored e-cigarettes and juices.
Health Minister Randy Delorey commented on the ban, stating: "This is about reducing rates." He noted, "Since e-cigarettes became widely used in Canada, we have seen a rapid increase in usage, particularly among young people across much of North America."
Taxation
Additionally, the province will impose taxes on e-cigarette products, which will take effect on September 15. Finance and Treasury Board Minister Karen Casey stated in a press release: "We must do everything we can to ensure that vaping products do not appeal to young Nova Scotians, especially considering the health impacts." She added, "We have been concerned about the rising smoking rates among young people, and we are responding to ensure their safety. We will continue to lead in this area."
Furthermore, Nova Scotia will be one of the first provinces in the country to obtain sales licenses. However, due to COVID-19, the regulatory process for introducing these licenses has been delayed, and not all licenses will be in place by the previously anticipated date of July 1. To this end, the province plans to use this delay to continue educating retailers and wholesalers, aiming to obtain licenses by August 1.
