WHO Report Maintains New Vaping Products Are Harmful to Health

An overview of the latest WHO report stating that emerging vaping products remain harmful to health and require continued regulatory attention.

On May 28, news from foreign media reported that the World Health Organization (WHO) has released three reports on e-cigarette products, informing countries about the current state of scientific knowledge and policy options available for new tobacco products. The reports cover: Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS), Electronic Non-Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENNDS), and Heated Tobacco Products (HNB).

ENDS and ENNDS, commonly referred to as e-cigarettes, are available in over 100 countries/regions, while HNB can be purchased in about 40 countries/regions.

The WHO insists that many new products are harmful to health.

In a press release, the WHO stated that HNB exposes users to toxic emissions similar to those found in cigarette smoke, many of which may cause cancer, while Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems themselves increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases and lung diseases, as well as adverse effects on fetal development during pregnancy.

Due to the destructive and addictive nature of these products, the WHO stated that regulation is crucial for protecting populations, especially young people.

The release of these summaries coincides with World No Tobacco Day on May 31, 2020. This year's theme is "Protecting youth from industry manipulation and preventing them from using nicotine and tobacco."
