Juul CEO KC Crosthwaite announced the board appointment earlier this month. He noted that during her time as Health Minister, Ambrose played a role in shaping regulations aimed at cracking down on the marketing of flavored vaping products and taxing cigarettes.
In recent months, lawmakers, health agencies, and angry parents have repeatedly accused Juul of fueling the current so-called teen vaping “epidemic.” Since its merger with tobacco giant Altria, the manufacturer has lost credibility as it originally positioned itself as reducing harm, and it has also faced multiple lawsuits.
Juul is committed to “winning the trust of shareholders”
To that end, the San Francisco-based manufacturer has been doing everything it can to win public favor. Crosthwaite said Ambrose’s appointment will help the company “work to win the trust of shareholders.”
“Smoking remains the leading cause of preventable death in the world, and supporting the potential of harm reduction for adult smokers is an important goal for individuals and health systems,” Ambrose said in an email statement. “But these new technologies will not succeed in eliminating cigarettes unless businesses and regulators work together to successfully address underage use. We must solve both problems.”
Last month, Juul filed a patent for an AI-powered device that could help users quit “juuling” by reducing daily nicotine consumption. In addition, to address high teen usage rates, Juul also announced plans last March to launch a device with an age-verification system and unlock function, available only to people at least 21 years old.
