WHO Report Maintains New Vaping Products Are Harmful to Health

[db:description]

On May 28, according to foreign media reports, the World Health Organization (WHO) released three reports on e-cigarette products, updating countries on the current state of scientific knowledge and policy options for new tobacco products. The reports cover electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), electronic non-nicotine delivery systems (ENNDS), and heated tobacco products (HNB).

ENDS and ENNDS, commonly known as e-cigarettes, are available in more than 100 countries and regions, while HNB products can be purchased in around 40 countries and regions.

WHO maintains that many of these new products are harmful to health.

In a press release, WHO said that HNB products expose users to toxic emissions similar to those found in cigarette smoke, many of which may cause cancer, while electronic nicotine delivery systems themselves increase the risk of cardiovascular and lung disease, as well as adverse effects on fetal development during pregnancy.

Because of the disruptive and addictive nature of these products, WHO said regulation is critical to protecting populations, especially young people.

The release of these summaries coincides with World No Tobacco Day 2020 on May 31. This year’s theme is “Protecting youth from industry manipulation and preventing them from using nicotine and tobacco.”
